  -Here’s a taste of history on how my people came a long way. 1492 when the European navigator Christopher Columbus happened upon a large island in the region of the western Atlantic Ocean that later came to be known as the Caribbean Sea . It was inhabited by the Taíno , an Arawakan people, who variously called their island Ayiti, Bohio , or Kiskeya . Columbus promptly claimed the island for the Spanish Crown , and renamed it La Isla Española ("the Spanish Island "), or Hispañola (later Anglicized as Hispaniola ). On Jan. 1, 1804, when Dessalines created the Haitian flag by tearing the white middle from the French tricolor, he achieved what even Spartacus could not: he had led to triumph the only successful slave revolt in history. Haiti became the world first independent black republic and the second independent nation in the Western Hemisphere .
